Activists call for more support to ensure safe childbirth in Uganda

Activists have said that to many women motherhood is supposed to be a joyful experience unfortunately the complications arising out of labour make the country to lose about 16 women every single day.

The National Coordinator White Ribbon Alliance Uganda(WRAU), Robinah Biteyi called for more support to ensure safe childbirth in the country.

She said while Uganda has made great strides in the reproductive and maternal health care for women, Uganda still have 336 deaths out of every 1,000 live births.

She made the remarks during the commemoration of the World Safe Motherhood Day.

"Uganda still loses many women per hundred thousand live births and one of the main cause is haemorrhage (over bleeding). This is preventable complication,"she said.

Winifred Ongom, the citizen journalist with White Ribbon Alliance Uganda noted that worldwide the campaign sought the views of one million women and girls about their top priority for quality maternal and reproductive health care services.

She said in Uganda over 9,000 women were interviewed.

Dr. Jesca Nsungwa, the commissioner Maternal and Child Health said when healthcare provision is informed by the views of women and girls,the needed solutions can be found to improve reproductive and maternal health outcome.

"We are losing 16 mothers a day in this country so we still need to believe and make sure that we have universal access to care for everybody,"she said.
