Too drunk to stand trial, court flops as drunk suspects black out

East Africa

Seven Kenyan suspects that had been brought to Kibera law to face charges of drunk and disorderly proved a problem for court after they blacked out within the premises and couldn’t literally stand trial.

The suspects according to a video from Nairobi News, simply sunk to the ground and stay put. It required warders to support them up but still, that proved inconsequential as they could neither stand, nor attempt to move.

This prompted the Senior Principal Magistrate Esther Bokh to defer charges until a time when the suspects would be able to face trial.

Kenyan media reports that the said suspects had been in jail for over 6 hours following the arrest the previous night, and it is only baffling that they still were intoxicated during court time.

Kenyan Prison authorities disown suspects

The Kenyan prison authority disowned the suspects were not in their custody as had been purported by the media.

“Our attention has been drawn to photographs and derisive messages circulating on social media regarding drunken suspects outside the Kibera Law Courts earlier today. While the six were intoxicated, which prompted the deferment of the hearing of their cases, we would like to clarify that they were not in our custody as wrongly reported,” a statement from Prison’s service read in part.

Suspects released

Following a debate on social media regarding the incident, Kenyan police released the suspects citing ‘humanitarian grounds’.
