"Show us proof of your appointment," MPs question embattled Bizibu

George William Bizibu yesterday failed to produce his formal appointment letter as executive secretary of the Departed Asians Property Custodian Board (DAPCB) leading MPs to question whether he was quailified to occupy the position.

Appearing before a select task force of the parliamentary Committee on Commission, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) investigating the sale of departed Asians properties, MPs asked him to produce the letter of appointment.

He could not.

Bizibu was appointed by the minister of Finance, Matia Kasaija. Before that, he was the minister's key campaign managers.

Last week, Bizibu conceded that there are accountability issues in DAPCB.

He said ownership of some of the properties under DAPCB had been obscured by the fact that the board does not have information on the current ownership of several plots.

Yesterday, the committee released a list of 460 properties that are under contestation which had been provided by Bank of Uganda. Bizibu said the list matches with what DAPCB has.

MPs have accused Bizibu of trying to cover up for some senior government officials accused of grabbing the Asian properties.
