UNRA begins demolitions ahead of Kampala Flyover project

Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) has started demolitions of structures and eviction of occupants along with areas affected by the Kampala Flyover project.

According to the UNRA media relations manager, Allan Ssempebwa, the exercise commenced Friday morning.

“Extensive engagements have been conducted with all the affected persons and they are fully informed of this exercise,” he said.

“The exercise will be conducted along the project area from Clock Tower through Nsambya Junction to Mukwano Soap Factory and will not affect the flow of traffic,” he added.

The exercise was initially supposed to start on Wednesday but it was halted without ceremony ‘pending a few discussions’.

The Flyover construction initially started in May with preparatory works on diversion of utility lines. By design, the flyover should be able to reduce traffic congestion in the city by widening lanes and eliminating roundabouts at the clock tower, Shoprite, and Queensway.

The flyover project will be executed in phases; phase 2 will be on Jinja Road near the Centenary Park and Wampewo Roundabout. The flyovers are also expected to connect outwards to the proposed Kampala-Jinja and Kampala-Mpigi Expressways.
