Four Kampala traders arrested for protesting against garbage collection fees

Police on Wednesday swung into action and arrested four traders in the city centre for protesting against garbage collection fees.

Kampala Minister, Beti Olive Namisango Kamya in May said cabinet had resolved that government takes over the role of determining the garbage collection fees in the city.

On Wednesday, traders under the Kampala Arcade Traders Association (KATA) took to the streets with placards protesting against the continued collection of garbage collection fees by some companies.

“Tenders for garbage collection expired and no one should collect any fees from us. The taxes we pay through the property tax and trading licence should cater for garbage collection,” said KATA chairperson, Godfrey Katongole.

The group said they were marching to the Kampala Lord Mayor’s office to seek redress from him and the KCCA council.

However, police didn’t not allow them proceed with to City Hall and four of the group members were arrested.

Kampala Metropolitan Area Police spokesperson, Patrick Onyango confirmed the arrest naming the suspects as Godfrey Katongole, Fahad Tamale, Swaib Kabuzigu and Mariam Kyabangi.

“They are going to be charged with unlawful assembly and inciting violence,”Onyango told the Nile Post.

Currently three companies includingNabugabo Up- deal Joint Venture, Homeklin Services (U) Limited and Kampala Solid Waste Management Consortium Limited are in charge of garbage collection in the city.

They charge between Sh3, 000 and Shs30, 000 monthly, for garbage collection from residential and commercial buildings but the fees are not decided by Kampala Capital City Authority.
