UCC warns media over "biased" reporting

As the media fratenity prepares to celebrate the World Press Freedom Day on May 3, the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has issued a stern warning to all media houses, to desist from broadcasting information that is likely to mislead or cause harm to the public.

UCC said those found culpable will be liable to prosecution and media houses shall be closed.
It also reminded and warned all Broadcasters that all content especially news broadcasts should be factual, balanced and free from all kinds of distortion and insinuations.
But some legal minds contested UCC's warning saying it is an infringement on media freedom.
They said there is a lot of media censorship and this only denies journalists a chance to report stories that have impact on the general public more so at a time when the country is getting ready for general elections in 2021.
Over the years, media freedom in Uganda has been violated something has raised several discussions both within and outside the country.
Reports from human rights organisations have always put government on the spot over the rough treatment of journalists.
