Parliament confirms Betty AOL as LOP, Government chief whip ready to work with her

Gulu MP Betty Aol Ochan has been announced as the new Leader of Opposition in Parliament replacing Winnie Kiiza, who has been at the helm for two years. Betty Aol will now appoint a shadow cabinet, supposed to keep government in check.

Betty Aol becomes the 5th Leader of Opposition since 2005 when multi party system was introduced. The announcement was made by Deputy Speaker Jacob Oulanyah after acknowledging receipt of the appointment letter from Forum for Democratic Change (FDC).

The announcement now settled the dust about whether Winnie Kiiza would continue to hold the office or not. In her maiden speech, Betty Aol emphasized unity and improving quality debate towards legislation.

As a gesture of comradeship, Government chief whip Ruth Nankabirwa pledged to work with Betty Aol for a constructive opposition for a platform to critique government.

Betty Aol is now in position to appoint and head an alternative shadow cabinet whose duty is to challenge and influence government legislation on the floor of Parliament.

Aol is the second LOP to hail from Gulu. The first LOP from Gulu was Alex Latim who led the opposition between  1964 and 1971 after replacing Basil Bataringaya as the Democratic Party Secretary General.
