Government to Close Illegal Orphanages

Government has given a 14 days ultimatum to the Ministry of Gender, Labor and social Development to clamp down all illegal adoption homes for the children in the country as they have proved to be a threat to the life of the young children.

Speaking on the floor of parliament on Thursday evening, the State Minister for Youth and children’s affairs Florence Nakiwala Kiyingi says the closure will see all affected children placed in the already legally established 36 adoption centers in the City.

Nakiwala told legislators that the government’s decision to clamp down all illegal adoption centres is as result of ever increasing street children in the city.

Nakiwala also says the directive to the permanent Secretary to the ministry of gender Pius Bigirimana will see the operation in the next 14 days.

The minister also told legislators some funders have been hoodwinked to support these illegal adoption centers by different individuals as well as the ever increasing number of parents disowning their children.

Meanwhile there have been back and forth accusations regarding the presence of street children on city streets. The Minister argues that it is KCCA’s mandate to evict the children while KCCA argues it is the ministry’s docket.
