Kirumira charged for storming out of police court; chairman denies ever being attacked

Embattled Buyende DPC Muhammad Kirumira was on Thursday charged with a number of offences related to his conduct of storming out of the police court recently.

Kirumira last week stormed out of the court in protest over what he termed as unfair and stringent terms put on him before being released on bail.

On Thursday, the court chaired by Denis Odongpiny read charges including scandalous conduct, assault and irregular conduct before producing a number of witnesses to testify against Kirumira.

The first witness in the dock was Goodness Ovuru, the court orderly who pinned Kirumira on trying to beat court members before being forcefully arrested by counter terrorism police officers and detained.

Ovuru testified that on the fateful day, Kirumira jumped out of the dock and went out of the court before the case had been adjourned.

“I tried to block him together with other officers but we could not because he shouted at us. We managed to push him out and put him in a nearby room,”Ovuru told the police court on Thursday.

He added that he had been assaulted by Kirumira and had got a few bruises.

Chairman denies being attacked

There was drama as the witness told court that Kirumira tried to assault the court chairman Denis Odongpiny.

“He reversed to the chairman and we thought he was going to harm him. We took him away,”Ovuru said.

However, Kirumira interjected asking that it would not be fair for Odongpiny who was a victim and possible witness in the case to remain seated as the chairman of the court.

Odongpiny was however quick to deny having been assaulted by the police officer.

During cross examination, Kirumira floored the first witness with a number of questions as he always cited the police standing orders.

Kirumira questioned Ovuru whether he had recorded any statement in regards to the matter before asking for a medical report over the bruises that the witness had claimed had been inflicted on him during the scuffle.

However in response, the police witness said he didn’t have any form of evidence in form of documents to back up his claims.

The case was later adjourned to next week.

He was later in the day released on bail after Assistant Commissioner of Police Sam Omara stood surety for him .

The maverick police officer was arrested early this month from his home in Bulenga, Wakiso district over indiscipline for going before media and announced he was quitting the force over what he termed as deliberate efforts to soil his name through various charges.

He was later detained at Nalufenya detention facility in Jinja district from where he was being picked to attend the police court proceedings.
