New board for the UPDF business wing inaugurated

The production arm of Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF), the National Enterprise Corporation (NEC) has held the inauguration ceremony for its new board members at their head offices in industrial area Kampala.

NEC is the business arm of the Uganda army.

Speaking at the function on Tuesday afternoon, the State Minister for Defence in charge of General Duties, Hon Col (Rtd) Charles Okello Engola urged the new board members to actively participate in expanding the enterprise from the traditional military hardware but also explore other ventures in the field of agriculture, minor engineering works, among others.

Col(Rtd) Engola noted that NEC exists to avail opportunities for research in agriculture, mechanics and other social services, adding that the defence ministry will continue to help the body develop human resource ad also provide the needed technical support.

The NEC Managing Director, Maj. Gen James Mugira, pointed out that the biggest challenge they face is limited funding from government and lack of skilled labor.

He revealed that they receive only Shs 2.2 billion as the annual capitalisation to cover all the subsidiaries of the body.

The incoming chairperson Board of Directors, Lt Gen Joram Mugume revealed that NEC is at a point of take –off and called for more facilitation from the Defence Ministry to increase on its performance level.

The new Board members are Lt Gen Joram Mugume (Chairman), while Maj Gen James Mugira, Maj Gen Fred Mugisha, Maj Gen Charles Otema Wanyi, Maj Gen Joseph Musanyufu, Maj Gen Peter Elwelu, Maj Gen Charles Lutaya, Prof Isaac Musasizi, Prof Charles Kwesiga, Eng Samuel Ssenkungu, Mrs Beatrice Byaruhanga, Mr Francis Ngabirano Kahirita and Mr James Wokada are members.

The National Enterprise Company acts as a Holding Company for the Luwero Industries Ltd, NEC Construction, Works and Engineering Ltd, NEC Tractor Project Ltd, NEC Tractor Project Ltd, NEC Tractor Hire Scheme Ltd, NEC Farm Katonga Ltd, NEC Uzima Ltd(bottled water), NEC Pharmaceuticals Ltd; while its joint ventures are Kyoga Dynamics Ltd, Pro-Heli International Ltd and NEC-Tunasco Ltd.
