Congolese refugees flood Hoima district

The number of Congolese nationals in Hoima district fleeing ethnic clashes in the Democratic Republic of Congo-DRC has reached 1300.

The displaced persons have taken refuge on Sebigoro and Nkondo landing sites in Kabwoya Sub County in Hoima district.

John Stephen Ekoom, the Hoima Resident District Commissioner, said the Congolese refugees including women, children and men, are under the care of the Office of the Prime Minister and United Nations High Commission for Refugees-UNHCR.

The tribal clashes pitying the Lendu and Bagegere in Ituri province in Eastern Democratic Republic of Congo broke out on Monday this week.

The clashes displaced people from Gobu,Jo and Muvaramu.

Ekoom said preparations are under way to relocate the refugees to Kyangwali refugee resettlement camp.

He said they have set up a reception center at Sebigoro landing site to receive and scrutinise the new arrivals.

Hoima District Health Department has also embarked on the vaccination of all the Congolese children who have crossed into the country against Polio and other diseases.

Dr. Fredrick Byenume, the Hoima District Health Inspector, said they will conduct a mass vaccination for all children under five years of age.
