Driver of Kagadi LC5 chairman arrested over grim protester crush

Police in Kagadi have arrested the driver of the vehicle captured in a video running over a protester.

Albertine regional police spokesperson, Julius Hakiza said  Stephen Tibihikira has been arrested for knocking dead  Tumuhaise Magezi, 25, a resident of Rwenzori Cell, Kayanja Parish, Mayirirwe Subcounty, in Kagadi District.

“The driver  has just been arrested and the vehicle impounded,” Hakiza said.

 The incident

The incident followed a protest by locals of Muhoro, Bwikara, and surrounding areas in Kagadi district over the poor state of Muhorro-Ndaiga road.

During the protest in Muhorro township,  a double cabin belonging to the district health department and was carrying the  LC5 chairperson, Yosia Ndibwami  ran over one of the protesters before continuing with its journey at break-neck speed.

The video has since gone viral on social media, with a number of people calling for the arrest of the perpetrators.

The Albertine region police spokesperson said Tumuhaise  died on the spot and the body was conveyed to the mortuary.

He however urged members of the public to always seek intervention from authorities for amicable solutions to their issues rather than resorting to protests.
