Masindi Chief Magistrate, Catherine Angwero is nursing serious injuries after a suspect she had convicted and sentenced to six months in jail, jumped on to the bench and pummelled her.
Kyogonza Fred Ford, a former clinical officer with Masindi District Local Government, was in Angwero’s ruling committed to prison as a civil debtor.
However, after Angwero read out the sentence, Kyogonza sprinted from his dock, jumped onto her and started throwing jabs on the head and in face, also disfiguring her mouth in the process. It took intervention from Prison warders and the court orderly to separate the two.
Angwero was rushed Kitara Medical Centre, Masindi with several injuries to her head.
“Plans to have her transferred to Kampala for better medical attention and to get her family’s comfort are underway. She is currently complaining of serious headache,” a source in judiciary intimated to Nile Post.
Meanwhile, Kyogonza has been already reprimanded but no new charges have so far been pressed.
Uganda Judicial Officers Association (UJOA) president Geoffrey Kaweesa condemned the act and called for more security for all judicial officers.
“This is unfortunate but it justifies UJOA’s call in our MEMO that led to Industrial Action. The call for securing all judicial officers especially magistrates and registrars,” he said.
