Bus overturns in Amuru, eight injured

A South Sudan bound bus has over turned at Keyo trading center between Lacor in Gulu and Pabbo trading center in Amuru district injuring eight passengers.

The bus, belonging to Onzuri Bus Company registration number UAJ 880R, overturned about 5:30am this morning, some 13 Kilometers North West of Gulu Town.

The bus that was heading to South Sudan from Kampala veered off the main road shortly after knocking dead a motorcyclist identified as Michael Okello Orom. He was riding a red Bajaj motorcycle registration number UEC 658A.

One of the travelers identified as Faith Aisha was injured seriously and is admitted in critical condition at St. Mary’s Hospital Lacor in Gulu district. The bus driver, Robert Laziko has handed himself to police at Gulu Central Police station. The wreckage of the bus is still at the scene of the accident.

Patrick Jimmy Okema, the Aswa River Region Police Spokesperson, says traffic Police in Amuru district have commenced investigations into circumstances, which led to the accident under TAR 57/2017.

The number of passengers traveling home for Christmas holidays has sharply increased on most up country roads since the beginning of the month. The incident is the first major accident involving a bus plying between Gulu and South Sudan border town of Nimule this year.
