Rwandan Security shoots traders dead inside Uganda

Police in Kigezi region has started investigations into a cross boarder shooting of two traders by Rwandan security in Rukiga District.

The shooting involved two male adults which included a Ugandan and Rwandan national and it happened yesterday, Friday 24th, May 2019 at around 8pm around Hamisavu trading center in Kiruhura village, Kasekye Parish in Kamwezi Sub country, Rukiga District.

The Rwandan national has been identified as Nyenge Peter, a business man while the Ugandan has been identified as Alex Nyesiga and both were shot dead.

According to the Police spokesperson CP Fred Enanga, the Rwandan national was shot as he tried to resist arrest after being intercepted as he tried to cross into Rwanda.

"The Rwandan citizen attempted to cross into Rwanda on a motorcycle loaded with his merchandise but turned back upon noticing security presence across the border. He was chased and intercepted by two armed Rwandan soldiers, a distance of about 80 meters into Ugandan territory. He resisted attempts to arrest him and was shot and killed instantly," Enanga said in a statement.

Enanga said that the Ugandan trader, Alex Nyesiga tried to intervene but was also shot at and killed instantly.

He added that the Rwandan security tried remove the body of the Rwandan victim but failed and the two bodies were later transferred to Kamwezi Health Center IV for post mortem analysis.

Police condemned the shooting of civilians saying that there was no justification whatsoever for the Rwandan security to illegally enter in Uganda and use such deadly force. Enanga said that when 44 Rwandan nationals illegally entered Uganda in the past, they were were intercepted in Kasese district and peacefully deported back to Rwanda.

They urged Rwandan security to respect human rights of the citizens living along the border if they're to avoid acts of provocation which might destabilise peace along the border.
