GUILTY: Kitatta stares at life in prison

Boda boda 2010 patron Abdallah Kitatta has been convicted by the General Court Martial in Makindye.

Kitatta who was arrested in January 2018 was accused together with his bodyguard, Sowali Ngobi and Ibrahim Ssekajja his driver, of being found in unlawful possession of an SMG rifle and a pistol without a valid firearm licence , contrary to Section 3 and section 2 of the fire arms act on January 21st in Wakaliga, Rubaga division.

The group was also accused of unlawful possession of 30 and 20 rounds of ammunition for SMG rifles and pistol respectively which are government stores, contrary to section 161 of the UPDF Act.

The army also accused the group of unlawful possession of military equipment including headgear and uniforms which are a monopoly of the defence forces.

On Monday, the court chaired by Lt.Gen. Andrew Gutti ruled that evidence proved beyond reasonable doubt that Kitatta was in possession of fire arms and ammunition illegally.

"Accused number one, Abdalla Kitatta has been found guilty of unlawful possession of fire arms and is hereby convicted of the offence,"Lt Gen.Gutti said.

The court also convicted Ngobi Sowali  of the same offences.

The offences against the group are criminal in nature and attract maximum sentences of death and life imprisonment respectively according to the UPDF Act 2005.

The court however acquitted eight other members of the notorious boda boda 2010 group of offences related to unlawful possession of military stores including military uniforms and caps
