The army has today withdrawn all charges against Robert Kyagulanyi aka Bobi Wine in the army court.

In a sitting in Gulu, the army said it had lost interest in pursing the charge of illegal possession of firearms that has been slapped on the Kyadondo East legislator.

In a ruling delivered by the chairman of the General Court Martial, Lt Gen Andrew Gutti, he said that it would be double jeopardy to try Kyagulanyi in the army court yet similar charges await in a civil court.

He said: "Court terminates proceedings against Hon Kyagulanyi. You are set free."

Earlier, Kyagulanyi's lawyers led by Medard Ssegoona had argued that the legislator was being tried in a wrong court since he is a civilian.

The ruling however did not rule out the possibility that the state could lodge a similar case in the High court, which has the jurisdiction to hear cases of such matter.

It remains unclear when the legislator will be handed back to the family.

The press and lawyers were allowed into the courtroom after the legislator had been brought.

In a sitting that lasted not more than 15 minutes, Kyagulanyi appeared composed.

He constantly smiled as the cameras focussed on him. After the charges were dropped, Bobi Wine clenched his fists to symbolise victory.
