Urgency used to pass Age Limit Bill should be deployed to debate matters affecting people- Bishop Luwalira

The Bishop of Namirembe Diocese Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira has described events that preceded the passing of the controversial 'Age Limit' as bad news.

Parliament endorsed the controversial bill on Wednesday last week. The MPs also voted to extend their tenure from five to seven years and also reinstated the presidential term limits that were scrapped in 2005.

While delivering his Christmas Sermon at St. Paul's Cathedral Namirembe this morning, Bishop Wilberforce Kityo Luwalira said the events that preceded the passing of the bill were bad news for the country.

He cited the invasions of both the Anglican and Catholic Chapels in the Parliamentary Building as the debate on the controversial bill went on. "May be after the investigations we will get to know what exactly happened. The past months have been a great test and the issue of age limit brought about a lot of fear and uncertainty." said Bishop Luwalira.

He noted the different protest campaigns from the Opposition dubbed 'Togikwatako' and the now 'Kogikuteko', saying they have left many Ugandans confused on what the future holds.

“I wish the energy and urgency used to pass the age limit Bill is the same the parliament uses to handle issues that affect people the most, when will they tackle issues on land chaos, corruption, marriage and divorce among others?” he added.

He prayed that the emphasis and energy that was directed to the passing this bill be used to tackle other challenges in the Country such as corruption, land wrangles, murders and domestic violence among others.

He appealed to hundreds of Christians that gathered at the Cathedral to carry good news that can bring peace and unity in a country full of bad news.

The Christmas Service was attended by Justice Eva Luswata, former Prime Minister Apollo Nsibambi, Buganda Kingdom Speaker Nelson Kawalya and the Kingdom's Finance Minister, Robert Waggwa Nsibirwa among others.
