ADF operatives in Kampala, UPDF warns

The Uganda Peoples’ Defence Forces (UPDF) has issued a public alert urging vigilance against potential ADF terror attacks following reports of a new infiltration by ADF operatives into Uganda. The alert comes in the wake of recent joint operations between UPDF and FARDC (Armed Force of DRC) that scattered the ADF into the jungles of the DRC, prompting retaliation efforts by the terrorist group.

In October 2023, Uganda experienced a wave of violence orchestrated by ADF terrorists who infiltrated the country through the Kasese district. Led by Kamusi and Njovu, the group perpetrated attacks resulting in casualties among tourists, students, and traders. Subsequent operations led to the death of Kamusi and the capture of Njovu, who is currently undergoing trial.
Despite these setbacks, recent intelligence reports indicate the infiltration of another group led by Ahamed Muhamood Hassan aka Abu Waqas, a Tanzanian ADF bomb expert, and his associates including Muhammed Issa, Amigo Kibirige aka Simba, Muhamad Lumisa, and Nasser Hamid Diiru. “One of them is suspected to have been sent by Abu Waqas for the current mission.” Col Deo Akiiki notified.
Saying that this development has prompted heightened vigilance among security agencies, with the UPDF and other sister agencies on high alert.
Col. Deo Akiiki, the Deputy Spokesperson of the UPDF, emphasized the importance of citizen cooperation in identifying and reporting suspicious activities or individuals. He highlighted the ADF's continued intention to instigate terror attacks in Uganda, particularly in urban areas, places of worship, schools, and public gatherings. Akiiki assured the public of ongoing efforts by security forces to apprehend the infiltrators and prevent further violence. “It is simply suicidal for these terrorists to continue making terrorism adventures into Uganda,” Akiiki said.
According to Col. Deo Akiiki, the UPDF continues its operations against the ADF in eastern DRC, collaborating closely with the FARDC. Plans to deploy local vigilante groups to curb ADF violence are under consideration, with strategies being shared between Uganda and the DRC to address the cross-border threat. “We are sharing all plans with our counterparts including some of the proposals the two heads of state (Uganda and DRC) shared on employment of LDUs (Local Vigilante groups) to stop killing.”
In light of the ongoing security challenges posed by the ADF, the UPDF urges citizens to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to relevant authorities. “The collaboration between security agencies and ongoing operations in the DRC demonstrates a concerted effort to safeguard the safety and security of Ugandan citizens.” Col. Deo Akiiki emphasized while addressing journalists at the Uganda Media Centre.
