The business community in Jinja has joined their colleagues in other parts of the country to protest against the enforcement of digital tax payment system,  Electronic Fiscal Receipting and Invoicing Solutions (EFRIS) by Uganda Revenue Authority.

By midday on Wednesday, majority of the city shops and arcades especially on Kutch road, Nizam, Main street and  Alidina road among others were under lock and key with owners seated outside their shops to monitor the situation.

While addressing reporters in Jinja, Juma Muyita the Chairperson of Jinja traders called upon the business community not to open their shops until government revises EFRIS system.

"This sit down strike is aimed at sending a signal to government to ensure businesses thrive harmoniously, we shall remained closed until the mess is sorted".

The anti -EFRIS campaign was launched by Kampala City Traders Association (KACITA) demanding that government revises the  system which they say has adverse effects on the business environment.

As traders continue to close their businesses, security is on high alert to prevent any eventuality.

Kiira region Police bosses said they have  heightened security in the City centre and Jinja surbubs expressing commitment to protect the people and their property.

Kiira region Police spokesperson James Mubi called for calm among members of the public as security monitors the situation.

"Meetings are going on among stakeholders to ensure the situation normalises so the public should keep calm and should should conduct their businesses without any intimidation," Mubi said.

He added that security have intensified foot and motor patrols to ensure the situation is under control.
