Releasing the exams on Wednesday at the Uganda Institute of Information and Communication Technology in Nakawa, UBTEB Executive Secretary Onesmus Oyesigye said the board registered 23,971 candidates , 7,573  of whom were females representing 32% while the males represented 68% .

“Generally, out of the 21,179 candidates who sat for examinations, 20,017 Candidates (93%) successfully acquired all competencies in their respective trades. He noted that last year, the trainees of national certificate courses that have undergone their training under the modularised training and assessment, performed better at 95%  compared to the performance of candidates in the previously non modularised assessment at 76% in 2022.

“The main reason is that in the latter assessment there is flexibility in training, more practical and hands-on training.”

Oyesigye added that across all other programmes categories, the competence acquisition rates are still very good, above 80%, apart from  the advanced craft courses with 69% competence acquisition rate.

In terms of malpractice, he said the cases had reduced by 46% in 2023 compared to 2022 examination series with the most common forms of malpractices being smuggling of unauthorised materials into the examination room, impersonation and collusion among others.

The State Minister for Primary Education, Moricu Kaducu hailed UBTEB for releasing the first cohort of trainees of modularized assessment.

“This paradigm shift from traditional assessment will make it easier and flexible for trainees to understand their competences better, become more functional and complete their studies in accordance with the required skills in time. This shows the level of commitment exhibited by the Board to deliver on key pillars of National Development Plan III,” Kaducu said.

She noted that government is committed to ensuring that we produce a dynamic and skilled workforce that will enable support for the growth of key sectors of the economy such as manufacturing, construction, oil and gas among others.

“I note with gratitude the positive changes being implemented by the board in line with the priorities of government in skills development agenda and also the affirmative action in supporting the girl child. I am happy to note that in the results being released today, female candidates have performed better than their male counterparts and that the number of girls have continued to increase in Technical Vocational Education and Training (TVET) institutions.”

Kaducu also hailed the progress of the UBTEB Assessment Centre construction project noting that a  shs7.5bn supplementary budget was approved by Parliament for that construction project.
