FORT PORTAL | A security lapse has sparked an investigation after three civilian suspects bolted from Ugandan custody.

The escapees, Richard Aliganyira, Chris Ruweez, and Bashir Kasaijja, were being held at the Mountain Division headquarters in Fort Portal, Kabarole District, on aggravated robbery charges.

Authorities haven't revealed the specifics of the escape, which occurred on April 23rd. However, it's clear that something went wrong on the watch of five UPDF soldiers.

These soldiers, including the guard commander, have been detained for questioning as the search for the missing men intensifies.

"We are taking this incident very seriously," a spokesperson for the Mountain Division and operation Shujaa Maj Bilal Katamba is quoted as saying.

"A thorough investigation is underway to determine how this escape happened and ensure those responsible are held accountable."

The missing individuals were reportedly in custody since November 2023. Details on the nature of their alleged robbery haven't been made public.

Security forces throughout Uganda are on high alert, and a nationwide manhunt for the escaped suspects is in progress.
