Arab Economic Development Bank Pledges Expanded Support for Health and Finance Sectors
Uganda has secured renewed financial and technical support from the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA), including continued funding for major health infrastructure projects and expanded credit lines to the Uganda Development Bank following high-level talks in Baku, Azerbaijan.

Uganda’s development partnership with the Arab Bank for Economic Development in Africa (BADEA) received a fresh boost following high-level discussions between the Permanent Secretary and Secretary to the Treasury Ramathan Ggoobi, and BADEA President Abdullah Khalil AlMusaibeeh.

During the meeting, on the sidelines of the 2026 Annual Meetings of the Islamic Development Bank in Baku, Azerbaijan, Ggoobi expressed Uganda’s appreciation for BADEA’s continued support, particularly in the health sector.

He said the bank is playing a key role in financing infrastructure aimed at improving healthcare delivery.

BADEA, in partnership with the OPEC Fund for International Development and the Saudi Fund for Development, is funding the construction and equipping of the Uganda Heart Institute in Naguru.

It is also supporting the refurbishment and equipping of Bugiri General Hospital. This is intended to expand access to quality healthcare services.

Dr. Ggoobi commended BADEA for its long-standing partnership with the Uganda Development Bank (UDB). He noted its contribution to Uganda’s economic transformation agenda, saying the bank has extended seven lines of credit to UDB so far, both directly and through government channels.

Currently, BADEA is providing two active lines of credit worth USD 150 million in total. This includes USD 50 million from its Public Window and USD 100 million from its Private Window.

The financing is expected to improve access to affordable credit for businesses and strategic investments.

BADEA President Abdullah Khalil AlMusaibeeh thanked the Ugandan delegation for the continued partnership. He reaffirmed the bank’s commitment to supporting Uganda’s development priorities.

He also pledged further collaboration aimed at advancing economic and social transformation.

The meeting underscored the strengthening relationship between Uganda and BADEA. Both sides expressed optimism about expanding cooperation in key sectors driving inclusive growth and sustainable development.
