Gomba Ssaza team has intensified preparations ahead of its second match of the 2026 Masaza Cup campaign against Ssese, scheduled for Sunday at Kabulasoke PTC Playground.

The Lions go into the encounter targeting maximum points as they look to strengthen their position in the competitive Masengere Group and improve their chances of reaching the knockout stages.

Sunday’s fixture comes after Gomba settled for a goalless draw away to Busiro in their opening match last weekend, a result that left them with a single point but still firmly in contention in the group.

Training sessions have continued at Kabulasoke, with the technical team expressing confidence that the squad is in good condition and ready to deliver a positive result in front of home supporters.

Assistant head coach David Sozi Nono said the team had taken positives from their opening game and shifted full focus to the Ssese fixture.

“Although we wanted to win against Busiro, the draw was still an important result because we were playing away from home. Now we are fully focused on Ssese. The players are in camp and training well, and we believe we can get the three points on Sunday,” Nono said.

Team captain Herbert Onenarach also expressed optimism, calling for strong support from fans as the team looks to bounce back with a win.

“We appreciate all the supporters who travelled with us to Busiro. Even though we did not get the result we wanted, we managed to pick up a point. This time we are at home and we are determined to give our fans a good performance and three points against Ssese,” Onenarach said.

Gomba currently sit fifth in the Masengere Group standings with one point and no goals scored, while Ssese are third with one point and a goal to their name. The standings set up an important early-season contest as both sides look to gain an advantage in the group.

The group is currently led by Kyaggwe on three points following their 1-0 win over Mawokota. Bulemeezi are second with one point and a goal scored, followed by Ssese in third. Busiro sit fourth with one point, while Gomba are fifth. Mawokota remain bottom without a point.

Supporters are expected to turn up in large numbers at Kabulasoke PTC Playground, with many backing the team to secure their first win of the campaign.

“We saw enough quality in the team against Busiro. They were unlucky not to win. Playing at home gives us confidence that Ssese will face a difficult challenge,” some supporters said.

Fans also highlighted key players including Herbert Onenarach, Jackson Semugabi, Moses Abiti and Alfred Kibiibwa as potential game-changers.

With both sides still searching for their first win of the season, Sunday’s encounter is expected to be tightly contested as they battle for early advantage in the group.
