The vibrant spirit of unity and cultural heritage was on full display as the highly anticipated Buganda Bika Football Tournament was officially launched at Wankulukuku Stadium, drawing participation from clans across the Kingdom.
The opening ceremony, graced by the Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga, marked the formal commencement of the tournament with thrilling football action between the Kabazzi descendants of the Kasimba clan and the Ennyunga clan.
The event drew a massive crowd, including clan elders, youth, cultural leaders, and enthusiastic supporters.
During his address, Mayiga called on all Baganda from various clans to actively support the tournament financially and logistically, stressing that such support is essential for the tournament’s long-term success and sustainability.
“This tournament is more than just a competition—it is a platform to celebrate our identity, unite our people, and nurture talent among our youth,” Mayiga stated. “Clans are the bedrock of Buganda, and supporting these teams reflects our collective commitment to preserving our cultural heritage.”
The first match saw the Ngabi Nnyunga clan strike early in the game, bringing excitement to their supporters, especially members of the Kanyana family. The Kasimba clan responded with a spirited performance in the second half, scoring an equalizer and raising hopes of advancing further in the tournament.
Spectators were treated to a showcase of talent and determination, as both teams demonstrated high levels of skill and sportsmanship.
The Katikkiro praised the players’ performance, describing the display as a testament to the Kingdom’s growing pool of youthful talent.
“The talent we are witnessing is a blessing. It shows how far we have come in promoting sports among our youth, and it gives us great pride,” he noted.
The tournament, which continues to gain prominence, has received substantial backing from corporate partners, including Airtel Uganda. Ali Balunywa, representing Airtel at the launch, commended the Kingdom for organizing the event and reaffirmed the company’s commitment to supporting youth and community development through sports.
“We are impressed with the level of organization and the skills showcased by these young players,” Balunywa said. “We encourage all Baganda to support their respective clan teams and make this tournament a resounding success.”
Robert Serwanga, the Kabaka’s Minister for Youth, Sports, and Talent, also addressed the gathering. He emphasized the role of the tournament in strengthening clan unity and outlined the tournament’s structure and schedule.
“The clans are the heartbeat of Buganda. Through this tournament, we are not just playing football—we are building bonds, empowering youth, and celebrating who we are,” Serwanga said.
As the tournament unfolds, teams from all corners of Buganda will compete for the coveted title, fostering unity and showcasing the Kingdom’s vibrant culture through sport.
