In a move to nurture sports talent in the Tooro and Rwenzori subregions, Victor Kalenzi, the Executive Director of Fins Medical University, has launched a regional boxing competition in Bunyangabu District, following the installation of a multimillion-dollar state-of-the-art boxing ring.
The event drew thousands of enthusiastic fans and hundreds of participants, including elite fighters like Amoko Innocent (UPDF) and Oume Hassan Habibu (Police), who showcased their skills to inspire the next generation of boxers.
The Kyamukube Playground in Rubona, Bunyangabu, was packed to capacity as spectators gathered to witness a thrilling mix of local, regional, and national boxing talent.
Local fighters such as Akugizibwe Ivan, Ategeka Francis, Mwesigye Patrick, Ronald Shafik, and Mutegeki Abdurrahim from Bunyangabu squared off against fighters from Fort Portal, including Kalimu Abdul, Kawawa Rashid, Rajab Bashir, and Tumusiime Abdul.
The event also featured Police and UPDF fighters, setting the stage for the main bout between Amoko Innocent (UPDF) and Oume Hassan Habibu (Police).
Under tight security and with medical teams on standby, the matches kicked off at 2pm, with intense three-round bouts showcasing impressive boxing techniques.
The crowd erupted in cheers and ululations as each pair entered the ring, showing their passion and support for the sport.
The highly anticipated clash between Amoko Innocent and Oume Hassan Habibu stole the spotlight at 5:30pm.
After five thrilling rounds, the bout ended in a draw, leaving fans exhilarated and eagerly awaiting more.
Victor Kalenzi, the chief organizer, emphasized that the tournament's goal is to develop sports talent and empower youth through the NRM's initiatives.
"The event marked a major step in unearthing boxing talent in Bunyangabu and beyond, with plans for more tournaments in the future," said Kalenzi.
Participants and fans alike expressed their excitement, with many praising the initiative.
Francis Ategeka, an aspiring boxer, shared his enthusiasm: "We're happy that what we’ve been watching on television has finally come to us."
The success of this tournament sets a promising foundation for future sports development in the region, fostering a new wave of talent and bringing communities together in the spirit of healthy competition.
