Kampala Metropolitan Police East has dismantled a violent robbery gang operating in Mukono Municipality, arresting six suspects and later apprehending an alleged ringleader in a coordinated intelligence-led operation targeting aggravated robberies in the area.
The Kampala Metropolitan Police (KMP) East has dismantled a notorious robbery gang accused of terrorizing residents in Mukono Municipality and surrounding areas, following the arrest of six suspects linked to a series of aggravated robberies.
According to Kampala Metropolitan Police spokesperson SP Racheal Kawala, the operation followed repeated complaints from residents about a group of youths known locally as “Eggaali,” who allegedly attacked victims using weapons such as knives, pangas, and pavers.
The gang is said to have robbed victims of mobile phones, bags, cash, laptops, wristwatches, and other valuables, particularly along Kayunga Road, Kusatu, Nasuuti, and Wantoni areas in Mukono.
Police said a series of intelligence-led investigations was launched after a case of aggravated robbery was reported at Mukono Central Police Station on May 25, 2026, under SD Reference No. 04/25/05/2026, involving a technician who was attacked and robbed while returning home.
Following investigations, police arrested Vian Muhanguzi, 25, on May 31, 2026, after developing what they described as crucial intelligence leads.
“Through intelligence-led investigations, we identified and arrested one of the suspects who later provided information that enabled us to trace other members of the gang and their hideout,” SP Kawala said.
Muhanguzi allegedly confessed during interrogation and led officers to a hideout in Kigombya Cell, where the suspects reportedly gathered before carrying out night robberies.
Police then arrested David Mubiru alias “City,” 20; Solomon Kizito alias “Kitama,” 18; Ssemanda Junior alias “Kamese,” 17; Paul Muyomba alias “Matama,” 17; and Mark Okumu alias “Sekere,” 18.
Investigators said the suspects admitted involvement in multiple robberies within Mukono Municipality, claiming they had lost count of their attacks on residents.
A search at the hideout reportedly recovered several items, including a Burdizzo, a pruning machine, a hammer, scissors, six wristwatches, suspected opium, counterfeit currency notes in Shs 20,000 and Shs 50,000 denominations, 18 SIM cards, a torch, two face masks, two heavy-duty door cutters, eight knives including a butterfly knife, and six phone chargers.
Police later arrested the alleged ringleader, Brian Lubanga alias “2PAC,” as investigations expanded.
“This operation marks a significant breakthrough in our efforts to combat violent crime in Mukono. Investigations remain ongoing as we continue to pursue other members of the criminal network,” SP Kawala said.
Police said efforts to trace additional suspects linked to the gang are continuing.
