Although details of the arrangement remain closely guarded, discussions reportedly centred on coordination of grassroots structures, shared political interests, and the potential role of the partnership in Uganda’s transition debate.

The ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) is set to hold a high-level meeting with leaders of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), a move that could mark the start of a new political alliance.

Insider sources say the two sides have agreed to begin working together as early as Tuesday, in what observers view as a strategic partnership to consolidate influence ahead of the 2026 general elections.

Although details of the arrangement remain closely guarded, discussions reportedly centred on coordination of grassroots structures, shared political interests, and the potential role of the partnership in Uganda’s transition debate.

Formed in 2023, the PLU is a pressure group-turned-political movement associated with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, President Museveni’s son.

It champions a generational shift in leadership, positioning itself as a platform for young Ugandans and advocating patriotism, economic empowerment, and continuity of stability.

Its leadership, drawn largely from retired officers and younger political mobilisers, has been vocal about preparing for Uganda’s post-Museveni era.

Gen Muhoozi, who had flirted with the idea of running for president in 2026 using the PLU as his launchpad, is also the Chief of Defence Forces and a senior presidential advisor.

Analysts suggest that if the NRM–PLU cooperation deepens into a formal alliance, it could reshape the balance of power heading into the 2026 polls by uniting the ruling establishment’s old guard with Muhoozi’s youthful support base.
