The National Unity Platform (NUP) has officially received its first batch of candidates for the upcoming Kawempe North parliamentary by-election.

After an inactive first day, the second day of the nomination process saw two aspirants present their credentials to the party’s Election Management Committee at the NUP headquarters in Kavule.

Among them was Umar Magara, who formally expressed his interest in contesting under the party’s flag. His arrival was marked by a lively procession that set off from Kawempe Tula at 11am, drawing enthusiastic supporters as it passed through Bwaise and Kavule.

However, another hopeful, Fredrick Kakiika, faced a setback as his nomination papers were rejected. He was advised to rectify the issues and return for resubmission.

“We encourage all aspirants to ensure their documents meet the required standards before submission,” an official from the Election Management Committee said.

As NUP deliberates on its flagbearer, the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) has already settled on Faridah Nambi as its candidate for the seat.

The Kawempe North parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of Muhammad Ssegirinya earlier this month.

With the by-election scheduled for March 13 and the nomination deadline set for February 4, more candidates are expected to enter the race in the coming days.

Meanwhile, for the Kazo-Angola councillor position, Yiga Musa remains the only candidate to have submitted his credentials and met the Election Management Committee’s requirements.

The seat became vacant following the death of Yakub Yusuf Kiggundu in a car crash in Kumi District over two years ago.
