Uganda Electricity Generation Company Limited (UEGCL) has launched a new safety campaign dubbed, "SafetyForStation", at Isimba Hydropower Plant.

The campaign is geared towards enhancing safety at all UEGCL operated power plants and actioning the company's health and safety policy.

The campaign will focus on areas that are rated vital in ensuring safe practices at the stations.

“The program looks at the five critical risk categories within the plant environment, namely: falls from height, struck-by and/or contact with/electricity, fire hazards, drowning and asphyxia,” Eng Proscovia Margaret Njuki, chairperson board of directors, said.

She said the “Safety for Station (S4S) programme further delves into 10 non-negotiable behaviour arising from these five major risk categories and encourages staff to diligently partake of the mitigation measures while reporting violations for improvement of uEGCL's safety culture.

Isimba HPP marked 1,000 days without Lost Time Injuries (LTIs) on November 12, 2023.

An LTI is an injury sustained by an employee that leads to loss of productive work in the form of absenteeism or delays.

With the launch of this campaign, the station shall continue to register no lost time injuries through maximum observation of the safety measures and hence achieving;

  • ● The creation of adequate awareness of Safety among staff and contractors while building the capacity of all our staff.

    ● The Increase in awareness amongst plant staff to make any health and safety observations

    ● The Establishment of an effective feedback system.

    ● Ensuring compliance to safe work practices/ procedures

    ● And fostering a safe working environment at all our plants.

Isimba HPP is a run of river plant with various hazards that if not contained, could lead to dire consequences.

The SafetyForStation campaign therefore comes in handy towards achieving this goal.
