Buliisa MPs cry out for help after floods ravage district

Members of Parliament hailing from Buliisa district have asked government to declare the situation in the area an international disaster after floods ravaged four sub-counties in the area.

In their joint press conference held at Parliament on Tuesday, the legislators led by Buliisa County MP Stephen Mukitale noted that the situation in the area is appalling after people’s houses, health facilities, a fish factory, markets, hotels and lodges were submerged.

This situation has left over eight lives lost and hundred fleeing to the West Nile and others to the neighbouring DR Congo in pursuit of safety.

During the press conference, the legislators said they are worried that more sub-counties may be submerged after getting reports that there is more flood water coming from Kenya and some parts of DR Congo.

The legislators now want government to declare the situation in the area an international disaster in order for the other countries to channel away the storm water.

Some of the government officials who have visited the area are Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda and the minister of state for Disaster Musa Ecweru.
