SC Villa requests to use rival Express FC's stadium to host UPL games

Record champions SC Villa have written to a rival club, Express FC requesting to use their stadium at Wankulukuku to host games in the StarTimes Uganda Premier League.

Last season, Villa hosted their games at Mandela National Stadium in Namboole but the facility is currently being used as a Covid-19 treatment centre leaving the team without any other option.

However, in a letter to Flavia Kalibbala, the stadium manager for Mutesa II stadium in Wankulukuku, SC Villa says there only option is their rival club’s stadium to host premier league games.

“We, therefore, write to management to be hosted for the 2020/21 season. We hope that management gives us the permission to access and host all our games at the stadium,” a September,8,2020 letter by the record league champions reads.

Express FC management recently started renovation at its stadium ahead of the new season.

The latest development of SC Villa asking to use their rival club’s stadium to host their home games in the Uganda Premier League will be an abomination, especially in the ears of the fans of the team, considering the rivalry between them.

Whereas SC Villa fans think of themselves as being from the upscale of the capital Kampala, they brand their counterparts from Wankulukuku as their direct opposite.

However, with the Coronavirus pandemic situation and the Namboole stadium being used by the government as a treatment centre, Wankulukuku seems to be the only viable option for the record league champions since the StarTimes Stadium in Lugogo owned by KCCA FC and St.Mary’s Stadium in Kitende owned by Vipers SC seems to be a little expensive for them.

The development also sheds light on the situation of the game of football in the country where most clubs don’t have stadia with minimum standards to host Uganda Premier League games.
