EC introduces more symbols for independent candidates

The Electoral Commission has increased the number of symbols to be used by independent candidates from 10 to 20.

The commission said this will enable independent candidates have a variety of symbols from which they can choose in the 2020/21 general election.

The new symbols include; mobile phone, television, tree, house, boat, candle, bunch of matooke, motor vehicle, loudspeaker and Jerrycan.

The original batch of symbols were; bicycle, pot, clock , chair , saucepan, table, cup, radio, kettle and a ball.

EC's acting spokesperson Paul Bukenya affirmed that all symbols are accorded to the candidates at no cost and thus cautioned independent candidates not to dare pay to be designated a particular symbol.

"We do not sell symbols, they are issued to aspirants on a first come and first serve basis," Bukenya emphasised.

The 20 symbols will complement the customised symbols for political parties such as the bus for NRM, a hoe for DP,  palm for UPC, weighing scale for JEEMA, the key for FDC and an Umbrella for National Unity Platform.
