FDC blames EC on lack of civic education ahead of 2021 general election

The Forum for Democratic Change (FDC) has faulted the Electoral Commission for failing to carry out civic education ahead of 2021 general election.

While speaking to the media at the party headquarters, the party spokesperson, Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda, said failure to educate voters led to the low voter turn up in the youth elections, a challenge that might be faced in the 2021 general elections.

“There is almost no information about these elections. We have candidates who don’t even know that the nominations are about to happen. We have a population which gets to know about these elections either when they are under way or when they are being completed,” he said.

He attributed chaos that erupted in the recently concluded youth elections to lack of civic education on the electoral process which might have a great impact in the forthcoming election.

“That’s why we saw chaos in youth elections. It is because the Electoral Commission is not supplying sufficient information to the population, the candidates and to the political parties," said Ssemujju

He noted the failure to educate the voters has caused turmoil as cited in the recently concluded elections.

“The 2021 general election is most likely to be the worst election we have ever organized in Uganda," he said.

In response, the acting spokesperson of the EC, Paul Bukenya, said they have limited resources to conduct enough civic education.

“We have always said that we don’t have adequate funds but that does not mean that we do not have some money to do what we are doing that is why we are having some activities going on,” he said.
