Bobi Wine: People joining NUP but not quitting their parties are causing confusion

2021 Elections Watch

National Unity Platform chairman Robert Kyagulanyi Ssentamu has said that a number of people are joining the party with intentions far from the struggle.

He made the statements while commissioning a fundraising drive at the party offices in Kamwokya on Tuesday.

“We have noticed a number of people joining us with strange motives other than the struggle, I call upon all of  you to be vigilant of such people,” he said.

Bobi said he is happy with the different members joining NUP and those who are expected to join them in the future.

He, however, called upon whoever makes such a move to completely commit to NUP rather than remain committed elsewhere and use NUP as a position of benefit

“According to the laws of Uganda you can only belong to one political party, therefore we will not encourage members who have one leg in NUP and one leg in another. I have said it before that you ae either a member of NUP or you are not,” he said.

Bobi Wine said the party respects and continues to work together with all other political formations seeking the change in Uganda.

“We have a clear understanding with comrades whom we are working with,” he said.

He said that whoever joins NUP should be clear on where they stand.

“You should be clear about where you stand. We can still work with you from where you are, if you join NUP kindly be with NUP, you can not belong to two political formations, that will help ease the confusion that has been ongoing,” he added.

Bobi Wine’s comments come after the sacking of DP stalwart Samuel Walter Lubega as the Vice-Chairperson of the Electoral Management Committee of NUP for allegedly promoting DP interests.

Lubega was sacked and replaced on Tuesday after being found guilty of supporting a DP candidate in the recently concluded youth elections.

Just last month, Bobi Wine welcomed 11 members of the Democratic Party who among others included; Mukono Municipality Member of Parliament Betty Nambooze.

However, speaking during an interview on NBS TV, Nambooze said she was still a member of the Democratic Party and will return to her party after the ‘end of the struggle’.

Bobi Wine is on record for claiming that the party welcomes everyone irrespective of their political affiliation, claiming that what matters is the goal, not the person.

Speaking about the switch of DP members, Norbert Mao said the group was 'creeping plants" who intention was to use Bobi Wine and support in their personal selfish gains.
