Uganda denies hosting meetings for Nyamwasa’s RNC rebel group

East Africa

The Ugandan government has rubbished reports that it had hosted meetings for rebel group, Rwanda National Congress, led by Gen. Kayumba Nyamwasa.

In a statement issued by the government spokesperson, Ofwono Opondo, Uganda said the claims are a calculated move aimed at tarnishing its name.

“Uganda reiterates that it does not know, host or deal in any way with such a group, a fact that has been ably communicated through the appropriate channels to the government of Rwanda,”Opondo said.

“Uganda does not harbor any intentions or interests of destabilizing the government of Rwanda.”

Government said it is still committed to the Luanda pact that was signed between Presidents Museveni and Kagame to end hostilities between the two neighbouring countries.

Opondo said the Ugandan government has proposed and is still waiting for a response from their counterparts in Kigali on the formation of a joint verification committee to follow up and resolve any outstanding issues.

‘Uganda will not be distracted by any provocative malicious propaganda in the media because it believes that the bilateral and diplomatic channels available will resolve any possible misunderstanding.”

The relations between Uganda and Rwanda have in the past two years not been at their best with each of the two sister countries trading accusations against the other.

Whereas the Kigali establishment accuses Uganda of supporting forces bent on overthrowing their government and arresting their nationals, the Kampala government denies the claims and insists all those arrested were spies.

The frost relations climaxed early this year with the closure of the borders shared by the two countries but the same has hurt Rwanda most because most of the products they use were either coming from Uganda or were passing through Uganda.
