Masaka, Mbale cities to start operations next financial year

Masaka and Mbale Municipalities have been added to the five cities that will start operations in July next year.

Five cities out of 15 were lined up for the 2020/2021 financial year to be operationalised, however Masaka and Mbale requested to be among the first batch after expressing readiness to start off.

Cabinet approved this and in July next year, the operations will kick off.

Cabinet approved a phased operationalisation of new cities in May this year, and the first phase had five cities for the start.

The wrangles in Masaka over the demarcation of the boundaries of the proposed city have been resolved said the State minister for Local Government Jennifer Namuyangu.

Other regional cities who which will begin operations next year are: Arua, Mbarara, Gulu, Jinja and Fort Portal.

The second phase which kicks off in the 2021/2022 financial year will have Hoima and Lira cities while Entebbe city will start operations in 2022/2023.

Nakasongola, Moroto, Kabale, Soroti and Wakiso as a Metropolitan City will come into operation in 2023/2024.

Each new city will have two divisions for full representation with Members of Parliament and division mayors.

The motion for the approval of the creation of the fifteen cities will be tabled in parliament within two weeks.
