MPs on Defence committee salute UPDF for contributing to safety on Somali waters

Members of Parliament on the Parliamentary committee  on Defence and Internal  Affairs has applauded the UPDF serving in Somalia under AMISOM for its efforts in contributing to safety on Somali waters.

The MPs who are concluding the six day visit to Somalia today checked on the UPDF Marines Unit in Mogadishu and were briefed by Lt. Col. Edward Ijjo the component commander of how the Ugandan army has deployed capabilities aimed at contributing towards maritime safety in Somalia.

“The legislators were happy to learn that the operations of the marine unit have greatly enhanced AMISOM to execute its mandate of supporting the people of Somalia,” the UPDF spokesperson, Brig. Richard Karemire said in a statement.

The MPs disembark from a UPDF boat in Somalia.

He added that the commanding officer appreciated the legislators for taking off time to visit the mission area and acquaint themselves with the goings within the AMISOM areas of responsibility.

The MPs were later led on a guided tour and ride on the waters before saluting the men and women in uniform for the selfless sacrifice to the cause of peace and security.

“They reiterated parliament's commitment to support the UPDF with resources to achieve its mission within the framework of AMISOM.”

Uganda was the first country to deploy troops under the AMISOM in 2007 and the Ugandan army played a big role in expelling the Al Shabaab militants who once controlled the biggest part of the country out of the capital Mogadishu.
