NBS TV's 'Stealing from the sick' nominated for AIB award

NBS Television and BBC Africa's investigative news story dubbed "Stealing from the sick," has been nominated in the prestigious Association of International Broadcasting (AIB) award.

Now in their 15th edition, the annual AIB awards are organised to celebrate excellence in broadcast journalism world wide.

An excited Solomon Serwanjja took to his Twitter account to celebrate the milestone saying.

"It feels good to be on the shortlist," he said in a tweet.

'Stealing from the sick' is a 53 minute story that shows the plight of patients at the hands of government officials who sell drugs meant to be given out for free to Ugandan citizens which leaves many with no access to drugs. It was a partnership between BBC Africa's Africa Eye and NBS Television.

In February this year, Serwanjja and three other BBC journalists were arrested by police while filming this investigation.

Police also raided Serwanjja’s home in Mukono were they arrested his wife.

The investigative story also aided Serwanjja to win this year's Komla Dumor Award that was set by the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) in honour of its presenter, Komla Dumor who passed on in 2014.

According to the BBC, Serwanjja impressed judges with not only with his eloquence and passion for telling African stories but also with his commitment and bravery in uncovering what’s in the public interest.
