URA to register all the motorcycles with foreign number plates

The Uganda Revenue Authority has ordered for a fresh registration of all motorcycles purchased across the border.

According to James Malinzi the Eastern Regional URA manager, several border districts have foreign registered motorcycles which have caused the tax body revenue huge losses due to the low price at which they were purchased.

“These are motorcycles which have not registered in the country and if they have not been registered in the country it means they have not paid due taxes on them. So as far as we the tax collectors are concerned, we are losing that,” he said.

He noted that it is very difficult to identify criminals using the unregistered motorcycles with foreign number plates who are operating in the country.

He said the authority has started a campaign to register all the motorcycles with foreign number plates.

“To solve that problem we are starting to run a project to make sure that we register all those motorcycles with foreign numbers. We shall give people a grace period of five months to report to the nearest custom offices and register those motorcycles depending on their validity,” he said.
