Uganda Police Force has started investigations into the sudden death of one of their officers who was serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM.

According to a statement by AIGP Grace Turyagumanawe, the Police director in charge of   Peace Support Operations Assistant Inspector of Police, Edward Bagonza was found dead on Saturday morning.

“He was found dead at his residence in Mogadishu,” AIGP Turyagumanawe said.

He added that the deceased’s body will soon be returned as burial arrangements are being coordinated by AMISOM.

Uganda is among the six countries with police officers in Somalia under the AMISOM.

Other countries with police officers in Somalia include Nigeria, Sierra Leone, Zambia, Kenya and Ghana.

Uganda first deployed police officers in Somalia in 2010 serving under formed police units, individual police officers and senior leadership team officers.

The Formed Police Unit is charged with public order management, protection of facilities and support to police operations that require a concerted response.

Individual Police Officers on the other side train, mentor and advise the Somalia Police Force officers.

The United Nations Security Council Resolution adopted in 2017 approved an increase to a maximum of 1,040 police officers serving under the African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM).
