People Power supporters in Busoga take government to court over power tariffs

A section of People Power supporters in Busoga sub region have dragged the government and electricity distributor Umeme to court over high power tariffs and rampant load shedding.

The disgruntled supporters said the high power tariffs and intermittent power supply have deprived a number of Basoga of their livelihood.

The group led by People Power coordinator in Busoga sub region, Moses Bigirwa and counsel Francis Muganga, petitioned court seeking a declaration to compel government and Umeme to let Busoga enjoy a comparative advantage by having constant power supply throughout the year at lower power tariffs.

They also want government to transmit power to every village in Busoga.

The disgruntled power consumers say they have suffered losses in their businesses and electrical appliances due to intermittent power supply which deprives them of the right to better livelihood.

Busoga sub region is home to four major power dams including Owen falls, Nalubaale, Bujagali and Isimba dam which contribute to the national grid.
