Otafiire promises more security for judicial officers after attack on magistrate

The Ministry of Justice and Constitutional Affairs has pledged to enhance security for judicial officers after the  incident at Buganda Road Magistrates court where a magistrate was pelted with a bottle of mineral water while delivering her ruling in the Dr. Stella Nyanzi case.

The Justice and Constitutional Affairs minister Rt. Maj. General Kahinda Otafiire while addressing the media this afternoon, strongly condemned the act saying he is going to contact the Chief Justice and relevant authorities to make sure courts are provided with more security to avert such acts.

Otafiire added that they are looking at introducing thorough body search and strictness in vetting the audience that attends court.

Otafiire condemned opposition politicians who expressed support for the attack on the magistrate. He expressed disappointment with several political leaders who were present at the sentencing but did not condemn the act in their public statements.

He said any of the suspects arrested in relation to the attack found guilty shall be dealt with in accordance with the law.

The justice minister advised those dissatisfied with the court's decision to appeal and seek redress in a higher court instead of attaching judicial officers.

Otafiire urged all peace loving Ugandans to condemn the attack on the magistrate and strive to protect the temple of justice.

Last Week Gladys Kamasanyu, a grade one Magistrate at Buganda Road Court, was hit by a bottle while delivering her judgement. Six people have since been arrested and charged before the same court.
