Makerere suspends three lecturers over alleged sexual harassment

Featured

Makerere University has suspended three lecturers over allegations that they sexually harassed their students.

The university despite putting up strict measures against sexual harassment continues to be hit with sexual harassment scandals every year.

In the latest developments, three lectures who have been identified as Medard Twinobuhungiro, Vincent Ssajjabi and Jackson Sekiryango have been suspended by the university Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe.

A back ground search by the Nile Post has placed Medard Twinobuhungiro in the School of Business, Ssajjabi in the School of Economics and Sekiryango in the School of Languages, Literature and Communication at Makerere University.

According to Makerere, Twinobuhungiro was recorded by his student demanding sex or else he sets a hard exam paper that will make her fail.

The policy at Makerere states that all complaints of sexual harassment are treated with confidentiality to

the extent practical and only those individuals involved in the investigation process and the decision regarding resolution of the complaint are provided access to information.

Last year, following an investigative story by NBS TV which pinned Dr Swizen Kyomuhendo, a senior lecturer in the department of Social Work and Social Administration in the School of Social Sciences, Makerere issued a report highlighting some of the major causes of sexual harassment at the oldest university in the country.

The report on sexual harassment of students at Makerere University indicated that impunity by lecturers has fuelled the vice at the Ivory Tower.
