Dr Spire , two others shortlisted for EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2024
A distinguished cartoonist and professor at Makerere University, Dr Jimmy Spire Ssentongo is one of three individuals shortlisted for the EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2024.
The Awards are organised by the European Union in Uganda in collaboration with the Norwegian embassy.

The Award, now in its 13th year, recognizes a human rights defender who has significantly contributed to advancing human rights in their community over the past twelve months.
"The EU extends congratulations to the three nominees, selected after reviewing numerous nominations from the public," stated the EU.
Dr. Spire, a multi-faceted figure in Uganda, has utilized his public platform to spotlight issues of accountability through social media "exhibitions."
"Despite facing threats for exposing misconduct in public life, he has remained steadfast in sharing information and engaging in public dialogues to enhance the quality of public service in Uganda," remarked the EU.
Jesca Ruth Ataa, hailing from Kotido, Karamoja, is a human rights defender leading Nakere Rural Women Activists (NARWOA), addressing various societal challenges such as humanitarian crises, inter-ethnic political instability, and women's rights issues.
"NARWOA has positively impacted over 15,000 women and 250,000 children through income-generating programs," the statement elaborated.
Doreen Kyazze, a lawyer and human rights activist, has advocated against the death penalty and championed women's rights in detention facilities. With extensive legal education and experience, she has contributed to drafting progressive laws and policies in Uganda and the wider African region.
"We commend each of these Human Rights Defenders for their remarkable efforts in safeguarding the rights of others. The recipient of the EU Human Rights Defenders Award 2024 will be revealed during a ceremony hosted by the Embassy of Denmark in Kampala on May 2nd, 2024," the EU concluded.
