COSASE pins Equal Opportunities boss on dismissal of staff

The Parliamentary committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) has directed the Equal Opportunities Commission to explain circumstances under which over 40 employees of the entity were allegedly dismissed without fair hearing.

According to the Vice Chairperson of the Committee Ibrahim Kasozi, the commission has been given two weeks to prepare their submission over the matter in addition to answering queries in the Auditor General Report for the financial year 2016/17.

Last week, COSASE unexpectedly adjourned its meeting with officials from Equal Opportunities Commission after the chairperson of the body, Sylvia Muwebwa failed to turn up.

Yesterday, Muwebwa appeared before the committee to answer queries raised in the auditor General’s report for the financial year 2016/17

Committee members disagreed amongst themselves before the witnesses on how they should handle the issues raised by one of the whistleblowers about mistreatment of staff in Equal Opportunities Commission.

This situation compelled Kasozi to adjourn the meeting for five minutes in order for members to agree on how to move forward.

After a closed door meeting, the meeting resumed with Kasozi giving an ultimatum of two weeks to equal Opportunities Commission to prepare a submission explaining why 40 employees of the organisation were expelled without fair hearing
