Exclusive

Government has finally named a team to set the ball rolling for a national dialogue in what appears a change of mind from the previous stand.

Sources within cabinet confirm that the team will be led by Deputy Attorney General Mwesigwa Rukutana.

Others on the committee include investment state minister Evelyne Anite, former UNATU Secretary General James Tweheyo.

Government Chief Whip Ruth Nankabirwa the NRM deputy treasurer Kenneth Omona and Dorothy Kisakka (PM’s Governance Advisor) are also part of the team that will represent government.

The process according to our sources is also incorporating the office of the leader of the opposition.

The Uganda National Dialogue was created provide a platform for Ugandans, in all our diversity, to agree on a shared transformative and development agenda that accelerates the consolidation of peace and justice, sustainable development and shared prosperity.

The dialogue format was first suggested by Inter-Religious Council of Uganda (IRCU) and The Elders Forum of Uganda (TEFU) as a means of solving political differences peacefully. These political differences often came to a head during presidential and parliamentary elections. Firm plans began to be made in July 2017.

Besides IRCU and TEFU, the Committee of Six included: National Consultative Forum (NCF), Women Situation Room (WSR), and Inter-Party Organization for Dialogue (IPOD) and Citizens Coalition on Electoral Democracy (CCEDU).

President Museveni okayed the formation of the national dialogue at a meeting in December 2018 to bring together all major political actors and stakeholders.
