The Sudanese army has declared a state of emergency after the overthrow of government led by President Omar El Bashir
In a press briefing held on Thursday afternoon, Sudanese minister of defence, Gen.Awad Ibn Ouf told journalists that all government positions are currently vacant until polls are organized after a transition period.
“President Omar al- Bashir has been removed from power and elections will be held during the transition period. The previous regime has been dissolved and the presidency, government and parliament are now vacant,” Abdel Marouf said on Thursday afternoon.
Marouf announced that a transitional military council will now take charge of the country for two years after which they will hold polls.
“We shall organize elections after end of the transitional period. Our embassies and diplomatic missions will continue operating as usual. Human rights should be observed by everyone.”
He said the state of emergency will last three months and will enable them consolidate security whereas a curfew lasting one month would also be effected by the army.
Omar Al-Bashir who had earlier stepped down as Sudan president was later put under house arrest by the army.
The development drew down the curtain for Bashir, a political hardliner and controversial leader of Sudan, after 30 years in power.
Thousands of Khartoum residents chanted "the regime has fallen" as they flooded the area around army headquarters where protesters held an unprecedented sit-in now in its sixth day.
The protests, which finally led to Bashir’s overthrow erupted in December 2018.
