Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) has embarked on more national security measures directing telecom companies to validate the information of those who hold multiple phone sim cards registered under a single national ID.
This according to the Uganda Communications Commission Public Relations Officer Ibrahim Bbosa, follows an audit report indicating loop holes in the SIM card data base.
It’s yet another race for phone users to update SIM card registration data with telecom companies as Uganda Communications Commission issues a new directive.
Ibrahim Bbosa, the head public and international relations, says the validation exercise is aimed at ensuring that the national identification numbers (NIN) on the National Identity cards match the owners of SIM cards.
In April 2018, biometrics were introduced for those with intent to acquire new SIM cards, replacement and swapping but those that submitted using the code *197 their finger prints were not captured.

Also captured in the SIM card update process is people with disability and those who lost national IDs.
The new directive from UCC has however received mixed reactions from the public.
This comes at a time, the national card registration authority NIRA is cleaning house on the errors made in the initial National ID registration process, making it even more inconveniencing to the public.
Bbosa says unfortunately the two processes will have to work hand in hand.
The directive however has placed of 10 numbers per national ID per network cap as a finger print is registered.
