VIDEO: Top Lira officials dragged to anti-corruption court over leisure park contract

Lira mayor Mike Ogwang, the deputy town clerk Patrick Ogweng and clerk to council Rebecca Achen have appeared at the Criminal Investigations Directorate headquarters, Kibuli, in relation to corruption cases in Lira municipality.

The trio were summoned following a raid of the Anti Corruption Unit in Lango sub region that resulted into prosecution of a number of officials who were charged and remanded to prison.

The mayor is being questioned for allegedly single handedly awarding a contract to a company to develop a leisure park in the town contrary to accepted procedures in procurement.

The summon follows public outcry about procurement, award of contracts and misappropriation of public funds

Eleven officials were subsequently arrested from the districts of Lira, Amolatar,Dokolo,Alebtong and Lira and facing charges in court.

Ogwang, Ogweng and Achen were subsequently released on police bond. They face charges of false assumption of authority contrary to the Anti-Corruption Act.
